MORE ARTWORK BY DAVID ADDED TO SHOP
I have added a number of paintings to my online shop. APART FROM the UTTER MAGUS UTTERED series—see the next paragraph—all the paintings are framed and glazed, and all the paintings were also exhibited at the large INVOCATION OF ALMOST exhibition of my work at the Begovich Gallery in California in the SecondQuarter of 2019. Please check each painting's description for details as to whether the piece was exhibited there, and whether it is framed.
Amongst the pieces I have added are the first four paintings from my UTTER MAGUS UTTERED series—I intend for there finally to be 111 paintings in the series, though I have only finished these 4 so far. Each piece is painted on an original page from a spare and unbound copy I have of the first edition of Francis Barrett’s 1801 masterpiece The Magus, one of my favourite-ever books. These 4 pieces all measure approximately 8.5 x 11 inches (21 x 28 cms). These pieces were not exhibited at the Begovich Gallery and are not framed. Although these images do not show it, I have inscribed the piece’s title at the bottom edge, and also signed it there too. £650 each plus P&P.
The painting used for the front cover of the Nature UnVeiled 2LP lathe reissue has been added, as well as one of the paintings used in the centrefold of the sleeve. Also added is one of the paintings used on the The Moons At Your Door album, a painting used on The Stars On Their Horsies, and Satan Instructs One Thousand Witches II xx which was used on one of Sputnik1985’s clothings, and subsequently arrested. There are also paintings of BELLA and of RedBarn As RedHouse, and of Children Singing In Hell.
Whilst working on paintings for my INVOCATIONS OF ALMOST exhibition at the Begovich Gallery, I made several paintings on (generally pre WWII) British Ordnance Survey Maps. Each painting is titled, dated 2018, and signed by me and they measure approximately 27.5 X 31 inches (70 x 79 cms). All of these pieces are unframed, and will be sent folded.
A short piece on my ArtWork can be found here.
I will regularly be adding more work to the shop, without announcing it on updates or on the website.
SIGNED COPIES OF THE LIGHT IS LEAVING US ALL & INVOCATIONS OF ALMOST NOW AVAILABLE
There are a small number of copies of The Light Is Leaving Us All and Invocations Of Almost now available from the shop, at the same price as the UnSigned copies. On the back of The Light Is Leaving Us All, I have inscribed them “The Birds Are Sweetly Singing / And The Light Is Leaving Us All” and signed them; on the back of Invocations Of Almost, I have signed them.
DAVID GIVES INTRODUCTION AT LONDON LAUNCH OF MARTIN WORTHINGTON’S NEW BOOK EA’s DUPLICITY IN THE GILGAMESH FLOOD STORY
I am OverMoon with honour to have been asked by my friend Dr. Martin Worthington, senior lecturer in Assyriology at the University of Cambridge, to make a brief introduction at the launch of his new masterpiece Ea’s Duplicity In The Gilgamesh Flood Story.
Martin has been a huge inspiration to me for many years, and has been astonishingly kind and helpful—and inspiring!—in my Assyriological studies. As explained in the press release, “This volume opens up new perspectives on Babylonian and Assyrian literature through the lens of a pivotal passage in the Gilgamesh Flood story. It shows how, using a nine-line message where not all was as it seemed, the god Ea inveigled humans into building the Ark.”
I Utterly Love Akkadian! So I was delighted to read the book several times for Martin, and it is one of my proudest moments to have been thanked so fulsomely by Martin in his introduction to the book. He wrote: “The final version befitted from the philological acumen of David Tibet, who with great generosity of time and energy not only lassoed hordes of typographical errors, but also alerted me to many instances where the phrasing could be rendered clearer, and in several places caused me to rethink interpretations of the Babylonian. Lasso (and magnifying glass!) in hand, David even re-read the entire manuscript at proof stage, again alerting me to all sorts of things I had missed. For all the energy he has devoted to this book, my gratitude to him is huge.” To be spoken of in such terms by such a distinguished Assyriologist—and such a lovely person—means more to me than I can say. Thank you so much, Martin, for involving me in your wonderful, perfect, book! I recommend everyone reads this profound, wide-ranging, brilliant, and often very amusing work!
The lecture is open to the public. It takes place on Tuesday 26th November at the Royal Asiatic Society, near Euston Station, London, at 6pm. As well as Martin’s talk about his astonishing book, there will be also be a Zipang performance by June Peters and Badia Obaid.
Anyone who plans to come should please let Amy Riach at the Society know, so they have a rough idea of numbers - EMAIL.
THERE IS A GRAVEYARD THAT DWELLS IN MAN: THE SECOND VOLUME IN DAVID’S ANTHOLOGY OF SUPERNATURAL STORIES FOR STRANGE ATTRACTOR
I and Ania Goszczyńska and Strange Attractor have been working for some time on There Is A Graveyard That Dwells In Man, the second volume of my favourite supernatural stories—ones which have hugely affected me and influenced my, and C93’s, work.
We hope the book will be published around the time of my 60th Birthday, March 5 2020. There will be a signed hardback edition with an accompanying chapbook of one of my favourite-ever stories, which is not included in There Is A Graveyard That Dwells In Man. All artwork on both the hardback and paperback editions of the book, as well as on the chapbook, has been done by me.
A paperback edition of the first volume, THE MOONS AT YOUR DOOR, is available from Strange Attractor here.
DAVID UTTERLY RECOMMENDS THE EXHIBITION A UNIQUE VISION: OUTSIDER AND SELF-TAUGHT ART
My belovèd friend Henry Boxer has curated an astonishing collection of “OutSider and SelfTaught” art at the Orleans House Gallery in Richmond, London. Entrance is free, and the exhibition is on till February 16 2020. Henry’s vision and taste is exquisite and justly recognised by all and everyone and everything. A couple of my paintings are included in the exhibition, as well as several of my THE LIGHT IS LEAVING US ALL Cabinet Cards.
DAVID JOINS THE TEAM OF THE COPTIC MAGICAL PAPYRI PROJECT
I have been transcribing some Coptic magical texts—a huge area of interest to me—for The Coptic Magical Papyri: Vernacular Religion in Late Roman and Early Islamic Egypt project. These texts haven’t been added yet to the website, but will be soon.
I am SO honoured to be involved with this Wonderful and Learned Team, on which page my profile may be seen along with the rest of the team.
Thank you so much to Korshi Dosoo, for inviting me to be involved, and to all the other wonderful scholars—and lovely people too—involved!
